A first school day is a big change made up of small moments. Talk about the journey, the classroom, and the people your child may meet. Leave room for their questions, including the ones that seem simple to an adult.

If possible, arrange a visit before the start date. Ask the school about arrival, collection, uniforms, supplies, and how to contact the teacher. Familiar routines can make an unfamiliar place easier to understand.

Prepare a bag together and practise a calm goodbye. A short, reassuring conversation is often more useful than a long list of instructions. Avoid promising that everything will be easy; remind your child that they can ask an adult for help.

After school, begin with a gentle question: something they noticed, someone they met, or one moment they enjoyed. Let their account arrive at its own pace. Tell the school when there is a concern that needs attention.
